WAYS TO MAKE YOUR SMALL BUSINESS GREEN AND ECO FRIENDLY

WAYS TO MAKE YOUR SMALL BUSINESS GREEN AND ECO FRIENDLY.

Ensuring your small business is green and eco friendly is not only beneficial to the

environment but can also lead to increased business and profits. As many people are

becoming more aware of environmental issues, they are more prepared to pay a higher

price for goods and services when they can see that a company is taking responsibility

and following green eco friendly practices.

By incorporating eco friendly green practices into your business you are helping not only

the environment but also your profit margin ! Ensure that your customers know about your

green credentials and you can be seen to be genuinely following your eco friendly

practices.

LEAVING THE CAR AT HOME and either cycling or walking is a good practice that should

be embraced as it is both beneficial to the environment and also to your own health and

fitness. If for various reasons this is not possible for you then public transport is still a

better alternative than using your car. For business owners who are looking for an office

or new worksite, finding a location near to public transport routes or with good access to

cycle lanes is worth considering.

WORKING FROM HOME.

A vast improvement to the daily commute for business  is to work from your own office at home, a good step for being green and eco friendly. Face to face business meetings are

no longer such a necessity with the diverse range of mobile communication devices and

video conferences now replace those face to face meetings. By working from home, you are helping to cut down on traffic and to reduce the resulting emissions. If you have a well

equipped office at home then there is also no reason that you can't meet clients there.

As well as the ease and comforts of being home based and the contribution you are making

to the environment, it is likely that working from home will bring tax benefits as well !

BREAKING AWAY FROM THE THROWAWAY CONVENIENCE CULTURE.

While many of us like to think that we are eco friendly and that we are doing our best to

minimize our contribution to the rubbish problem, the truth is that we could be doing even

more.

Helping the environment by reducing waste means overcoming our addiction to throwaway and single-use products. A good example is the single cup pod coffee makers now seen in many offices and businesses. A large tin or jar of ordinary coffee can make many more cups of coffee at a fraction of the price of the single use throwaway pod !

As well as providing recycling points in the office or business, there are other ways to be

more eco friendly.

Encouraging employees to bring their own cups and refillable water bottles negates the need to throw away plastic cups and bottles.

If you have a kitchen area, it is far better to have large containers of condiments rather than

small single use items.

Composting kitchen waste is far more environmentally friendly than putting it into the rubbish bin.

Warm air hand driers in kitchens and washrooms are a better alternative to paper or

conventional towels.

ECO FRIENDLY GREEN PROCUREMENT.

One of the best ways to make your business more environmentally friendly is to practice

green procurement. This involves sourcing goods and services that are produced and supplied in a sustainable fashion. Sourcing from local suppliers rather than those produced from a long distance away is a good way to start.

Have a look at your procurement policies and ensure that the goods you purchase :

Are manufactured in a sustainable fashion.

Do not contain toxic materials or substances.

Are recyclable and if possible are made from recycled materials.

Are made from renewable materials such as wood or bamboo for example.

They do not use excessive or non environmentally friendly packaging.

Are preferably repairable and not destined for landfill if broken.

REDUCTION IN WATER USAGE.

For both those who believe in climate change and those who do not, it is an inescapable

fact that water is an important resource that should not be wasted.

Ways that can be employed to reduce water usage at your home or business premises

include :

Fixing dripping taps and plumbing leaks, installing low flow water usage toilets .

Using high pressure water washers for cleaning rather than a hosepipe fixed to a tap.

Landscaping garden areas to use minimal amounts of water.

REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF POWER USED.

Simple steps to take to reduce the amount of power used :

Switching off appliances when not in use rather than leaving them on standby.

Switching off lights at night when the office is not in use.

Ensuring that doors and windows are closed when heating or air conditioning is in use.

Installing solar powered products such as solar water heaters and using solar panels.

RECYCLING ELECTRONIC GOODS.

Rather than throwing away old electronic goods that are no longer required, they should

instead be taken to approved recycling centres for disposal. Alternatives to this is selling

them on auction sites for spare parts or donating them to charities that have the facilities

to repair them or again, use for spare parts. Many serviceable electronic goods end up in landfill for no good reason. Many retailers also offer good trade in deals for your old equipment when buying new from them.

Batteries from old electrical goods are also recyclable and should not be thrown into the rubbish !

HOPEFULLY the ideas above will inspire you to become more eco friendly in your business

and it will help the planet and your profit margin !
